The Best Songwriters from the Golden Age of Hollywood – Part Two – The Great Lyricists.
The Thirties to the Sixties.
Clockwise from top left: Irving Berlin,Yip Harburg, Oscar Hammerstein II,Sammy Cahn, Ned Washington, Johnny Burke, Al Dubin (with Harry Warren at the piano), Dorothy Fields, Johnny Mercer.
47 Lyricists: 202 songs.
Irving Berlin tops the list with 23 songs, followed by Johnny Mercer with19, Sammy Cahn with 16, Ira Gershwin with 14, Johnny Burke and Al Dubin with 10, Yip Harburg with eight, and Mack David with seven.
Four women stand out on the list in what used to be a very manly profession.
Dorothy Fields has seven songs listed. She was the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1936 for her lyrics to “The Way You Look Tonight.” It would be an incredible 32 years before another woman won in this category: Marilyn Bergman for her lyrics to “The Windmills of Your Mind” in 1968.
Doris Fisher and co-writer Allan Roberts wrote two of the most enduring songs of the forties; “Put the Blame on Mame” and Amado Mio.” Both songs are from “Gilda,” and both are “sung” by Rita Hayworth, whose voice is dubbed by Anita Ellis. With choreography by Jack Cole.
Sylvia Fine, who was married to Danny Kaye from 1940 until he died in 1987, was nominated for her lyrics for “The Moon is Blue” in 1953 (music by Herschel Burke Gilbert) and for her music and lyrics for “The Five Pennies” in 1959 making her the first woman to achieve this landmark.
Dory Previn was nominated for her lyrics three times; “Faraway Part of Town” from “Pepe” (1960: music by her then-husband Andre Previn), “Second Chance” from “Two for the Seasaw” (1962: music by Previn) and “Come Sunday Morning” from “The Sterile Cuckoo” (1969: music by Fred Karlin). The first woman to win an Oscar for composing music for the Best Song of the Year is Barbara Streisand for “Evergreen (Love Theme for a Star is Born),” with lyrics by Paul Williams, in 1976. The first woman to win Best Song, having written both the music and the lyrics, is Carly Simon for “Let the River Run” from “Working Girl” in 1988.

In the fifty-four years since Dyan Cannon won the first won Best Supporting Actress in NY in 1969, fourteen of their choices have failed to get a nomination.
Although Charles Laughton made only one and, therefore, final film, based on this film alone, he is of the Great Directors.
Number One: Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (Sidney Lumet: 2007). Number Five: Family Plot (Alfred Hitchcock: 1976).
As for Judy Davis she gives what is probably her most outstanding performance, which means it’s one of the greatest performances ever captured on film.
The 2023 Best Actress Oscar Goes To…Danielle Deadwyler in Till. And as she reaches the volta of her magnificent speech she does something extraordinary…
I had no problem sitting through the movie’s bloated 180-minute running because, through all of this nothingness, five actors manage to make lasting impressions
Hume Cronyn and John Randolph are our happy and well-adjusted gay couple. Yes, they fight and bicker all the time. However, they are clearly madly in love with each other.
In “Kind Hearts and Coronets”: Alec Guinness has fun playing all eight (or nine) of the unfortunate D’Ascoynes, including Lady Agatha D’Ascoyne. The photograph shows Dennis Price with Joan Greenwood who plays that little minx Sibella.
They were the darlings of the art house circuit. Their work in a language other than English is some of the greatest ever captured on film. But Hollywood…
Hal Mohr** is the only person to have won a competitive Academy Award without being nominated for it. Mohr was allowed to keep his Oscar and won a second.
