OPENING FILM
The Boy and the Heron – Hayao Miyazaki
Of the almost 150 films that are showing at the festival, a total of 57 are World Premieres. Many of these films are concentrated in the festival’s CENTERPIECE PROGRAM, which focuses on World Cinema.
A total of eleven films showing at TIFF will get their premiere at the Venice International Film Festival the week before. These include the latest and debut offerings from Richard Linklater (“Hit Man”), Michel Franco (“Memory”), Bertrand Bonello (“The Beast”), Daniela Goggi (“The Rescue”), Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir (“City of Wind”), Ryuichi Hamaguchi (“Evil Does Not Exist” ), Agnieszka Holland (“Green Border”), Shinya Tsukamoto (“Shadow of Fire”), Mariana and Santiago Arriaga (“Upon Open Sky”), Nikolaj Arcel (“The Promised Land”) and Pema Tseden’s “The Snow Leopard.”
A huge batch of Cannes Premieres are also making their North American/Canadian debuts, including the Palm d’Or winner Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” the Grand Prix winner Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” The Best Actress winner Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s “About Dry Grasses,” The Best Actor winner Wim Wender’s “Perfect Days,” the Jury Prize winner Aki Kaurismaki’s “Fallen Leaves,” the GAN Foundation Award winner Amjad Al Rasheed’s “Inshallah a Boy,” the Best Screenplay and Queer Palm winner Kore-eda Hirokazu’s “Monster” and other Cannes favorites such as “A Difficult Year” by the notorious duo of Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, “The Feeling That the Time for Something Has Passed” by Joanna Arnow, “Robot Dreams” by Pablo Berger” and veteran Spanish director Victor Erice’s “Close Your Eyes.”
From Sundance, we have Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play,” John Carney’s “Flora and Son,” and Noora Niasari’s “Shayda”, from Tribeca, Katja Gauriloff’s “Je’vida,” from SXSW, we have Molly McGlynn’s “Fitting In,” from the Berlinale, we have Ilker Catak’s “The Teacher’s Lounge” and Ivan Sen’s “Limbo” and, from Locarno, we have Ena Sendjarevic’s “Sweet Dreams”
The opener is Hayao Miyazaki’s Japanese anime “The Boy and the Heron” while the closer is the Sylvester Stallone documentary, Thom Zimmy’s “Sly”
