With what is happening today in Afghanistan, Jasmila Zbanic’s “Quo Vadis, Aida?” packs a double wallop as a critique of disastrous foreign policies and what they eventually mean for the native population. Aida (magnificently played by Jasna Djuricic) is a translator for the UN in the town of Srebenica in Bosnia. In 1995, when the Serbians overtake Srebenica, Aida knows the horrific fate that awaits her husband and two sons if they are found and, for two hours, you watch as she frantically tries to get them out. The name Srebenica, like Auschwitz conjures up images of unimaginable horror – the killing of thousands of men, young and old. As a coda, Quo Vadis, Aida?” also shows how easily we move on from war crimes, going back to daily life as if nothing has happened. Nominated for Best International Film at the 2020 Oscars
