In anointing Swedish director Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” as the Best European Film of 2022, the 4,400 members of the European Film Academy (EPA) showed that they are just as capable of demonstrating questionable judgment as their brothers and sisters in AMPAS.
The awards, which were given out this past Saturday at a ceremony in Reykjavík, Iceland, also bestowed Ostlund’s trite and vulgar satire on the heartlessness of the monied classes with statuettes for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor (Zlatko Burić).
Vicky Krieps took home Best Actress for her performance as the Empress Elisabeth of Austria in director Marie Keutzer’s “Corsage” (Austria). At the same time, Mantas Kvedaravicius’s chronicle of his return to the Ukrainian city of Maripol during the height of the Ukrainian war won Best Documentary. Kvedaravicius was killed while making the film in April of this year.
