David Lowery’s Enthralling “The Green Knight”.

The Green Knight

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

The uniquely talented David Lowery (“A Ghost Story“, Pete’s Dragon” “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints“), has adapted the 14th century chivalric romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight for the screen and, for most of its two-hour length it’s enthralling.

King Arthur

Dev Patel is Gawain, not quite yet a sir, the nephew of King Arthur (Sean Harris) and Queen Guinevere (Kate Dickie) and the son of Morgan Le Fay (Sarita Choudhury), who practices witchcraft.

Gawain’s journey

The bulk of the movie centers on Gawain’s journey across the wet, verdant English countryside (the film was actually filmed around Cahir castle in Ireland). Gawain is fulfilling a promise, made one year earlier to The Green Knight who appeared at King Arthur’s court at Christmas. Along the way, he encounters an eerie yet magical bunch of characters from Barry Keough’s thief (a real scoundrel) to Erin Kellyman’s Saint Winifred to a talking fox.

Alicia Vikander

Alicia Vikander does double duty as his lover, a peasant girl, who lives just outside the Castle and the mistress of a mysterious household he encounters on his journey.

The kiss!

The story is complicated and leaves a few questions to be answered – what about that kiss – but everyone is on top form including Patel who keeps the entire enterprise afloat on his reliable shoulders.

NSFC

For his work on “The Green Knight”, Andrew Droz Palermo won the Best Cinematographer award from the NSFC.

“THE GREEN KNIGHT” IS AVAILABLE FOR STREAMING ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO AND APPLE TV.
