The Plot is Never Quite Clear.

The plot, which is never quite clear during this long, tedious and, at times, sleep-inducing offering, involves the hijacking of a plane that ends badly, and some hocus pocus within the CIA. Director Janus Metz Pedersen takes whatever seed there was in Olen Steinhauer’s screenplay (and novel) and trashes it in one scene after another.

As for an actual denouement? There isn’t on

“All the Old Knives” is a two hander with Chris Pine and Thandiwe (new spelling) Newton playing former lovers and CIA operatives. Although they try, especially in an extremely protracted scene in a fancy restaurant in Carmel-by-the-Sea, they are utterly defeated by Pedersen’s pedestrian direction. As for an actual denouement? There isn’t one. The words confusing and silly come to mind.

Skip It.

There are some nice shots of Vienna at the beginning while the restaurant in Carmel looks very inviting. If this eatery exists, then I would highly recommend it for a meal. Otherwise, take my advice and skip this wretched movie.
